Day 4: A favorite TV show

Posted on 12:07 by simmo
Easy peasy lemon squeezy. (Sorry, Star Trek TOS, you're second.)

The Virginian is a classic Western with good values, great characters, and intriguing plots.  Set in the very-late 1800s, the show revolves around the people of Shiloh Ranch and (best fictional town ever) Medicine Bow, WY.  "The Virginian" is the anonymous but hardworking foreman of Shiloh Ranch.  There's a splendid diversity of plots and settings; at the same time, the "world" of The Virginian is recognizable, in a good way.  The landscape and town are familiar, like places you really could (and want to) visit.

Before we discovered this show, some of my family members had already watched other Westerns--lots of the old, pre-Eastwood classics.  (I feel like a bad person for saying it, but I really don't like watching John Wayne, and Gunsmoke gets horribly repetitive...) When my dad got The Virginian Season 3 from the library--the only season they had on the shelf--I expected it to be boring.  Plus, starting with Season 3 won't work, right?  Wrong.  My favorite character doesn't show up until S3 (hint: episode 1).  XD

My family and I have watched The Virginian S1-5 out of chronological order (which is no big deal), and we're hoping the library will have S6 soon.  This is one of the few TV shows that is popular with the whole family.  And it increased my interest in the Western genre, so even if it doesn't sound like your thing, you should give it a try!

Found and found

Posted on 21:31 by simmo
  • 7:00 a.m.: Third exam in International Relations.  There were several "what year did this happen?" questions, but it wasn't too hard.
  • US History.  I can see that the girl sitting two chairs over has this picture as her desktop wallpaper.  Made my day.
  • During break in Geography, found somebody's touchscreen phone in the restroom.  Decided to come back later to turn it in, if it were still there after class (highly possible, given the time of day).  Amazingly, class ends 1 1/2 hrs early (unprecedented).  I go to the library to find a computer and look up where the Lost & Found is.  Come back, and the phone is still there.  Turned it in to the security people, and hopefully its owner has got it back by now.
  • Lasagna.  Maybe the ultimate comfort food.
  • We finished The Virginian S2...noooo!  Now waiting (impatiently) for S5 from the library.  We're not watching it in chronological order, but fortunately it doesn't matter.
  • Another article:  Sherlock Holmes fan wins the Spelling Bee!
How was your day?

Life and times, iii

Posted on 11:36 by simmo

Studying.  Imperialism & Colonialism, the Great Depression, Biomes (forest/desert/etc), and Earth Materials/Plate Tectonics.  My favorite part about physical geography are the maps that show climate & biomes across the world--it's fascinating to match the different regions that have the same features.  I always thought that our corner of the Pacific Northwest matched England--and it does, for climate.  But for biome, it actually matches Scotland.  EDIT: It almost matches Scotland...it's one biome adjacent to Scotland.  But very close.

Reading.  The Mystery of Cloomber, by Doyle; South, by Shackleton, and a few other books (kinda sorta).

Writing.  More poems!  I'm THIS close to getting my poems published.  Indeedy, I did say that a few months ago, but after a brief hiatus, I've added eleven more poems to the book and will potentially add a few more.  In any case, there will be 3 sets of poems in the book, with two or three very long poems.  SO KEYED UP.

Watching.  Good Mythical Morning, The Virginian S2 (addicted to this show, can you tell), and Star Trek: TNG S3 (so-so).  Also watched most of The Big Country (let me tell you, I don't like watching Charlton Heston play the bad guy--it's just WRONG).

Listening.  Hvorostovsky singing Verdi.  He will be performing in Don Carlo next Feb/Mar at the Met--I am SO going to see it if they play it in movie theaters (as has been the case recently).  Alas, NYC is a bit far to travel for a concert.

Weather-watching.  The rain is so nice.  ^_^

Hectic week

Posted on 01:15 by simmo
Uni transfer application.  *facepalm headdesk headWALL*

Rethinking my schedule for my last quarter at community college.  Planning to take a geography class that is supposedly to count as a lab science.  It really bothers me that the uni doesn't define lab science--at least for transfer students--anywhere on their admissions website, and the people on the phone can only give me vaguely optimistic theories.  In fact, it bothers me so much, right now I'm up late at night (or is it morning?) trying, via several trains of Google searches, to find the answer.  Failed, needless to say.  Not happy.  If I were to take this class and find out it doesn't count, I'd be seriously unhappy.

It'd have been a jolly gloomy spring break if that were all I've been up to.  Well, we worked outside last weekend.  I bought and cut out this pattern today, hope to work on it tomorrow.  Watching The Virginian S4.  My new Kensington mouse came in the mail--best mouse EVER, and on sale too!  Reading The Great Enigma, at long last.  Bought a "poncho"-style tunic top at the thrift store.  All is well in my personal life.

And it's raining steadily, which to me is a bonus.

Good night, good morning, have a nice day, whatever time it happens to be where you are!

Life and times, ii

Posted on 17:29 by simmo

Studying.  For finals week, this week!  Thankfully, Tech Writing ended with a super easy assignment--four-paragraph movie review.  Jolly good thing, after our big recommendation report (group project) of the last two weeks.

Photo-taking.  Daffodils and awesome windmills.

Reading.  The Club of Queer Trades (G. K. Chesterton) and re-reading Heart of Darkness (Joseph Conrad).  Chesterton was a genius with the sheer power of his word choice.  Oh, and Heart of Darkness...I loved it the first time and this time around I know why--Conrad's writing, both style and substance, is pure gold. A good book is three-dimensional; Heart of Darkness is 4D.

Writing.  Absolutely nothing at the moment.  But I've got a trillion and one ideas in my head, for stories present and future. One of my characters is just begging to be written about, which is troublesome since there are two stories that come before hers.

Watching.  Good Mythical Morning, The Virginian, season 3, and Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford).

Thinking.  About anonymity on the internet and how it affects the psychology of individuals and humanity as a whole.  I've been thinking about this for several days, actually.

Weather-watching.  Cold, sunny afternoons.  Gothic rainy days.  Snow, on and off...in fact, this month I drove in the snow for the first time.  Luckily, it was 'ideal' snowing conditions--no ice on the road, just snow.  Oh well, it was my big adventure for the week..
