Change

Posted on 17:04 by simmo

It came suddenly this year.  Fall in the Pacific Northwest is not always magnificent; the trees are just slowly beginning to turn; the weather, overall, has been alternatively dry and muggy the last few months.  Nonetheless, fall is here and everywhere. It is not so much something you can see - just a thunderclap sense that something has changed.  (Oh, all right, Pumpkin Spice Lattes help...)

*These photos are from earlier this month; we are indeed getting real thunderclaps today!

What a year this has been already!  In a week and a half, my fourth and last year of college begins.  *double-take*  Can it be so soon?

Everybody is asking me what my post-graduation plans are.  Abridged answer is "get a job," but the other day I took time to jot something more thoughtful down in my journal.  Here is the paraphrased version:
  • becoming self-sufficient (don't get me wrong, though, my family is the best!)
  • pursuing perpetual education (self-taught)
  • following God's Will above all
  • using my independence, education, ideals, etc., etc., towards the best possible purpose (i.e. previous point)

This summer I had no job, internship, or classes.  It was intensely disappointing, for a variety of reasons.  But ultimately, I realized (for the umpteenth time?) it is silly to compare myself to others.  What was my goal in college?  To get a degree; to get a job with that degree.  So far so good.  It happens I am not a typical comp-sci student and couldn't possibly be.  I have other interests, just as strong and worthy to have majored in.  It's ok.  Comp-sci feels right (I'm quite happy with my choice) but it's not the be all and end all.  There are so many options.

"The good thing about all of these deliberations, doubts, and possibilities is that I feel something  is changing and happening."  Couldn't say for sure what  is happening, yet, but I'm ready for this academic year.  Wherever you are in your own life, I hope it is a good year for you, too.

Belong Somewhere

Posted on 03:00 by simmo

"If you could move anywhere, where would you want to move to?"

In our family, asking hypothetical questions is a favorite pastime.

"Well, I liked Pennsylvania, and New York," I said half-heartedly.

It wasn't a lie, it was just a truth that didn't mean anything.  Since childhood, the idea of moving has been a nightmare, or, at best, a bad idea.  Now I think I've finally figured it out.  I belong in the Pacific Northwest - "belong" in exactly the possessive sense of the word.

I am a first-gen PNW girl.  And that can mean a lot of things, which is why I feel isolated, when I'm not.  The PNW is a diverse patchwork-place.  It may be known for rain, coffee, and liberal politics, but once you live here, you see a huge array of subcultures, substereotypes, and interesting trends nobody talks about, since they're understood.

Loneliness thrives here.  Loneliness on both societal and individual levels.  If we have one thing in common - be it an affection for a deadly volcano over our heads, or a mystical fascination with the paradise that is California - we cling to this commonality.  The feeling of belonging somewhere else brings people together, too; as they see it, they are rooted here for a season or two of their lives, but if they stay any longer it is quite by accident, or habit.  They move about tentatively, ergo they form ties with everyone and no one.  Loneliness almost unites the lonely, almost.

Oddly enough, I don't get that feeling of belonging elsewhere.  For that and other reasons, I certainly don't fit in here; I belong to many "groups," but of each label I am always an atypical version.  The main point, though, is that there is nowhere I could fit in better.  It is enough to belong somewhere, never mind elsewhere.  I intend to stay here indefinitely, pull our moody weather over my head, and be glad that Conrad understands.
‘It seems to me I am trying to tell you a dream—making a vain attempt, because no relation of a dream can convey the dream–sensation, that commingling of absurdity, surprise, and bewilderment in a tremor of struggling revolt, that notion of being captured by the incredible which is of the very essence of dreams….’

He was silent for a while.

‘…No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life–sensation of any given epoch of one’s existence—that which makes its truth, its meaning—its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream—alone….’

Rain

Posted on 21:36 by simmo
You know you're weird when you rejoice at the return of rain, in your famously rainy climate.

8:00 pm today, the outdoors still had that rainy, persistently green, cosy-afternoon aspect, more like 4 o'clock with a glowing grey sky.  I thought it was absolutely gorgeous.  Nobody here really understands.  They take a "grass is greener" view of the weather--but really, how could grass be greener in a sunny climate?

Sunny weather effects people's emotions in a positive way--the same goes for me, except it's rain instead.  Rain is a sight and sound for sore eyes and ears.  If you made me move to a desert climate, I'd become severely depressed, as if I were a geoduck harvested for an upscale eatery.  (Or something like that.)  Do you understand the feeling?  Everyone feels that way about something.

By the by, sorry for the lack of in-depth posts.  It's not so much that I have nothing to write about, but there's very little interesting to say.

Dear Mt Rainier,

Posted on 19:27 by simmo
We haven't seen you in what feels like eons.

Every day on my way to and from school I search the sky for you, but all I've seen are foothills and clouds.  Stop hiding, won't you?

Rain

Posted on 10:59 by simmo
After the snow and ice, rain and clouds has suddenly become "good" weather.  Well, I always liked it.  :)

And now that the power is back, I can work on my poem, which might be finished this weekend.  I have a couple of short research papers I could write, too, but we'll see...

Power at last!

Posted on 14:23 by simmo
No, I am not running for the U.S. presidency.  I'm referring to the RETURN OF THE ELECTRICITY after 30+ hours of power outage (with a 15 minute break this morning, before it went out again).

Words fail to describe how we feel.  Ok, I take that back--coffee, internet, pasta, coffee.  And grateful.

Another thing I'm thankful for is that school was cancelled again today (as it was yesterday).  I wouldn't have been able to go, even had it been open.  What was six inches of snow in my last post is now 5-6 inches of snow + 1/2 inch layer of ice on top--ice that only breaks apart into smaller sheets.  It's just started melting seriously within the last couple of hours, when the rain started.  Hopefully all the ice on the plants and trees will start melting more quickly, too.  Our largest trees were damaged pretty badly.

And that's about it, for now.  There are still a lot of people without electricity.  I'll be posting again, sometime in the next 24 hours, if our internet is still up and running!
