Art

Posted on 10:43 by simmo
[But first I'd like to say thank you to KatySue at *~Not All Who Wander Are Lost~* for awarding me the Liebster tag!  I'll be posting it very soon.  :) ]

One of the things I really miss in my life is drawing (pencil and digital).  It kind of went the same way as my violin-playing--just when I was reaching a high point, school became time-consuming and music fizzled out of my life.  There's nothing more pathetic than unintentionally quitting something; the only optimistic side to it is that I don't have to admit I quit (sort of equally pathetic, though).

With digital art, I used to be pretty active in an internet forum several years ago, but as my objectives changed and the forum changed, I stopped progressing and, if anything, lost some technique.  Pencil sketching was something I did on my own.  I've long had the goal of combining the two and making use out of my digital graphics tablet, but it's still just a goal.

Website design is another art-related hobby I'd like to revitalize.

This is all a symptom of a bigger problem, my trouble with balancing school and real life.  It's easier to blame school, but the fact is I can do better personally.  With my hobbies, I'm not good at thinking outside the box or trying every possible solution to make the time and opportunities for them happen.  I'm bad at rationing out my energy, too, so that if I spend it all on school I have very little left over. So obviously this is something I need to work on.

I think the first thing I ever wanted to be when I grew up was an artist, and on a broader scale this is still true.  German has a good word for this: Gesamtkunstwerk, or "total art."  Artists (even amateur ones like me) have a strange challenge, in that they have to create work for themselves.  That's not something you think about when you start creating art (of any kind), but it becomes a very real thing when you have to have a legitimate reason and outlet for your art.  One would think that it'd be easy to find an outlet for "total art," but this involves its own problems, maybe greatest of which is losing focus.  You can get swallowed up in what you feel are the separate nagging demands of each of the art forms, losing the common ground they all have.  It's worse when you juxtapose this with school, where the common ground is simple: get good grades.

I don't have an answer for this right now, but it's at a point where I need to start working on this seriously, and making priorities instead of letting them evolve in negative ways.

Day 17: An art piece

Posted on 08:20 by simmo
Of course, I love the Wanderer--he has been on my blog for a long time.  I don't get tired of him.  This is artistic and psychological brilliance.
Caspar David Friedrich - The Wanderer above the Mists - WGA08251
Caspar David Friedrich. . .his art makes me so happy.  He was a German Romantic artist, but I find a Pacific Northwest connection; oftentimes I'll be outdoors and suddenly realize, "That's a Caspar David Friedrich landscape!"  I really have seen clouds like this:
Caspar David Friedrich 054
I'm indebted to Wikimedia Commons, because I keep finding new pieces by him!  But here's another perennial favorite of mine, Der Watzmann.  The textures, colors, and rock formations are classic Friedrich.  There is such a tidiness to his style, plus a perfect balance/conflict between realism and fantasy.  More Friedrich epicness here.

Rain...rain on the Barrow Downs

Posted on 18:44 by simmo
It's late afternoon, and the weather outside is rather curious.  The ground, the trees, everything on the surface of the world is black and green, almost as dark as sunset.  But behind the fir-tree tops, the sky is chalky white--an utterly bright, pale grey.  Until you get right up close to the window, and then you can see darker, feathery clouds, right above.

It changed just a moment ago--now everything has a greyer, more mellow look to it.  The darkness and light are more evenly distributed.  The rain's picking up, too.

The lights just flickered...

I wish I had a picture to share, but my camera is practically oblivious to atmosphere and rain.  It can only see black trees and grey sky...so narrow-minded!

In lieu of a photo, check out this stormy painting, by Bierstadt:

And this ocean scene by Friedrich:

Which somewhat resembles the Oregon Coast:

Utterly gorgeous.

Travels in Photochrom

Posted on 18:25 by simmo
Just discovered the Library of Congress's Photochrom Print Collection.

Neuschwanstein Castle LOC print rotated

And I.  Love.  It.
Troldfjord, Raftsund, Lofoten, Norway
It's photography...but it's also art.

Fall in Glenariff. County Antrim, Ireland

I don't pretend to understand the process, but photochrom is basically a way of colorizing B&W photos.  I think it's quite amazing.  I love the Victorian solemnity and vintage color schemes, with a pink/peach tinge and emphasis on warm colors.

Glenariff, County Antrim, Ireland, 1890s

Forget Blu-Ray--find me a DVD player that plays in photochrom!  ;)  No, seriously.

Tutorial: 21st Century Vintage (coloring)

Posted on 08:16 by simmo
Tutorial for:  GIMP
Inspiration:  the video clip of London in the opening credits of "Sherlock" (BBC).  Sort of a bright, slightly vintage, almost-pastel color combo.  After some experimenting, I was able to get something pretty close:

1.  Sharpen your picture (if necessary), then duplicate.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

2.  Make your foreground color #c36596 and the background color #fce498.  On the duplicate layer, go to Colors > Map > Gradient Map.  Set this layer to Color, 19 opacity.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

3.  Duplicate the original, move this duplicate to the top.  Foreground color:  #a4ff95; background color: #ffffff.  Go to Filters > Repeat Gradient Map, and set this layer to Grain Merge, 49 opacity.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

4.  Duplicate the original, move this duplicate to the top.  Foreground color:  #e579c0; background color:  #f7ca77.  Filters > Repeat Gradient Map, and set this layer to Color, 22 opacity.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

5.  Duplicate the original, move this duplicate to the top.  Foreground color:  #4c3ab1; background color:  #f6f3fc.  Repeat Gradient Map, and set this layer to Overlay, 73 opacity.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

6.  Duplicate the original, move this duplicate to the top.  Foreground color:  #dbe06c; background color:  #f3febf.  Repeat Gradient Map, and set this layer to Overlay, 75 opacity.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

7.  At this point, you might (or might not) want to further adjust the opacity of the layers, brighten up the original layer (Colors > Levels), or tweak the colors/saturation on the original layer (Colors > Hue-Saturation).  It just depends on the original photo.  :)

"Art...is liable to take the strangest forms"

Posted on 12:50 by simmo
Once in a blue moon, when I'm feeling artsy and photo-manipulative, I'll open up GIMP and make some user pics (or wallpapers, if I'm really in the mood).  I love fiddling with colors and effects; it's almost therapeutic.  ;)  Here's a handful that I did yesterday:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us  Image Hosted by ImageShack.us  Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us  Image Hosted by ImageShack.us  Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

{The first three are results from Wunderkind_Lucy's tutorials, the second three are freestyle, and the last one I don't remember which.  All photos taken by me.}

There are whole blogs/journals dedicated to making user pics.  At first glance it sounds a bit extraordinary...upon closer acquaintance, it makes sense and is a pretty fascinating idea.  There are several factors involved.  For example, how much can a subtle change in scale and positioning effect the picture?  Or how can color gradients take a drab picture and turn it into a traffic-stopper?  In the end, it's all about how much art one can fit into 10,000 pixels of space, which is really quite small.

And apart from all that, it's just a time-effective way to practice photo-manipulation.  And, GIMP is 100% free, so there's nothing to lose.  ;)

Sketches of characters

Posted on 10:51 by simmo
The first is a protagonist, Philip, from my 18th-century story:
 Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
I really like this one, mostly because of the fact that I didn't use a reference photo but it still turned out ok.  I don't think it looks exactly like him (more like Horatio Hornblower), but it's pretty close.

The second is Alan Breck from Kidnapped.  It might not be quite finished, but close enough:
 Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
It was supposed to be drawn or finished with colored pencils, but I don't think I want to risk it now--colored pencil drawing is not my forte.  Maybe if I print it up first.  This one was harder to draw, especially the face; next time I'll draw on a slightly larger scale.

Thirdly, here's a picture I drew a year or two ago:

James McAvoy as Bilbo Baggins!  ;)  Not likely to happen, I know...  :(

A portrait of Miss Smith

Posted on 16:33 by simmo
Art & sewing are in 3rd place in the poll (so far), so I thought I'd post another pencil drawing.  By the way, what kind of movie reviews would you be interested in reading?  All the ones I've posted thus far have been new movies (to me, at least); however, I could also review some of my favourites.  Or least favourites; but then, I'd have to sit through them again...

Now, the drawing.  For their birthdays and Christmas, my siblings each give me a list of book/movie characters they like; I pick one, and then draw a portrait for them. Well, for Emiko, I decided to draw Harriet from Emma (2009), and I didn't realise until later that I was actually drawing "a portrait of Miss Smith", like Emma does in the story.  Lol.

[Note: this was slightly edited in GIMP, for printing purposes]

As you can see, the Woodhouses' landscaping is very...minimalistic.  And I still can't draw curly hair very well.

By the way, a bit of random news: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is going to be in 3D!!  And I'm pretty excited.  =)  While I don't want The Hobbit movies to be 3D (I think it would be bad for continuity and atmosphere), I would go see Voyage in 3D.  I wonder if the soundtrack will be released before the movie is?

And thank you for all the character name ideas; it was very helpful!!  I've got it narrowed down to 2 names, but haven't decided for sure yet, and I'm open to more ideas, too.  :)

my name is Prince Caspian

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This is from last year, and unfinished.  As you can see, the chainmail is fail.  Does anybody have any tips on how to draw good chainmail?  I'd kinda like to finish it, so long as it's not going to turn out looking like a sweater.  ;)
