One of the best episodes in this (somewhat inconsistent) series of made-for-TV Hornblower movies. In The Fire Ships, Midshipman Hornblower attempts to study for an important exam while dealing with sickness aboard the Indefatigable, an embittered seaman, and an arrogant but influential captain. This episode exemplifies what makes this series great: vivid characters, exciting plots, complex topics/situations, and contrast between the "rule the high seas" glory and the brutal realities/injustices of life in the navy. There's a lot of food for thought, while The Fire Ships remains a fun, swashbuckling, summery movie to watch. I recommend it for ages 15+!
