This is my normal life

Posted on 14:49 by simmo

And I love it. ♥

Yesterday I got my computer science major declared LIEK FOR REALZ (that is, officially).  Java II ain't easy, but for sure, I'm happy with how things are going.  It just feels right again.  Everything feels right.

Can you believe tomorrow is the last day of January?  Warp speed!

journal 1.2 - The frozen days we set ablaze

Posted on 18:42 by simmo
Source: Uploaded by user via Marian on Pinterest

Like they say - no news is good news.  I had an awesome week.  School is going swimmingly, GMM is back, and Pinterest has taken up way too much of my time (yes, I actually-finally signed up, haha).  Now I think I'll have a nice cup of hot cocoa and read some more readings for school!

{ I really do want to be a better blogger - and actually write, you know, posts - so hopefully that is something I will be working on soon. }

Good Mythical Morning returns TOMORROW!

Posted on 19:57 by simmo
Good Mythical Morning is a sort of talk show hosted daily (Mon-Fri) by YouTubers Rhett and Link.  Each episode is about twelve minutes long - they talk about everything funny or random or weird, from bad dreams to DIY haircuts to "How Not to Buy a Car on Craigslist."  I've seen every GMM episode (and either all or most of its predecessor, GMCL.)  This show has been an awesome, and often hilarious, way to start the weekdays!  Season 3 begins tomorrow morning (Jan. 13) - episodes will appear on Rhett and Link's second channel: rhettandlink2.

Answers to 'ask me anything'

Posted on 12:37 by simmo

How would you describe your taste in books, overall?

These days, I'm drawn towards books with psychological, character driven, and/or political themes.  And I tend to stick to old books.  :)

Very random— Did you have any imaginary friends as a child?

The first stories I wrote had characters that were (sort of) like imaginary friends (I was also one of the characters in the stories, you see).  Sherlock Holmes was my best imaginary friend!

Who are you...where do you come from...where are you heading to?  (Interpret those as you wish.)

Firstly, I'm neither an introvert nor an extrovert - just terribly reserved.  I like public speaking; social gatherings don't exhaust me; and I'm exceedingly bad at conversing about things which interest me.  In general, when it comes to small talk I'm tongue-tied, though I can't resist talking about current events/history/politics (my one interest I can talk coherently about).  I like being around people, and I love peace and quiet.  I get along with everyone, but I'm instinctively independent.  You could call probably me a sociable loner, or something like that.

Besides that, I'm a rational Romantic, "Renaissance woman," and first-rate daydreamer.  I find it hard to relate to most people.  I feel much older than my age, always have.

I've lived in the state of Washington all my life.  I am really attached to the rain, woods, gray skies, Mountain, and Pacific Ocean.   Though I disagree with most of what goes on here, overall I love Washington and don't plan to move.  As Bilbo says, "It's no bad thing to celebrate a simple life."  Once I have a degree, my plan is to get a steady job, my own place, and a Welsh corgi.  I try not to over-think the future!

I know you are in College and I am curious about what kind of degree you are getting? What have been your favorite classes so far?

My degree will be a bachelor of science, computer science.  (Previously, my degree ideas were music performance, accounting, and math...somehow, it evolved.)  Favorite classes!  Probably Spanish 2, Music Appreciation, English 101, and any class with my first history professor.  Honorable mention goes to my calculus classes, where something hilarious was always happening.

Winter in Antarctica

Posted on 09:35 by simmo
'It's a six-month expedition in almost constant darkness, in the coldest place on the planet, with no chance of rescue if things go wrong. British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes calls it one of the last remaining polar challenges: crossing Antarctica during the region's winter.
'Against the backdrop of Cape Town's majestic Table Mountain, Fiennes, 68, and his five-member team left the South African port city on Monday aboard a South African polar vessel, the SA Agulhas, for what they have dubbed "The Coldest Journey."'  (Full article here, official blog/website here)

And I thought this sort of thing didn't happen anymore!  (One of my dreams is to visit Antarctica, when it's summer, that is.)

Always a good time

Posted on 20:29 by simmo
  • Went to Starbucks to visit with Sophia the other day!  We don't often get to see each other, and it was fun being able to talk before winter quarter starts.
  • Speaking of coffee, I've just got to say that I love Starbucks.  I've got nothing against Tully's either.  They're both part of our Seattle coffee tradition, so cool beans (pardon the pun).
  • Started a poli sci book (one of my 2013 reading goals).  It's called America and the World, an interview with foreign policy advisors of George H. W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.  Very interesting, and somewhat disconcerting, so far.
  • Watched S1 of Downton Abbey in the space of a day and a half.  Because we're cool like that (actually, the season is only seven episodes long).  I just read the synopsis of S2 (no copies at the library right now!) and we're getting ready to watch S3 E1 on PBS tonight.  Soap operas aren't my favorite, but I do like it better than Lark Rise (which was horribly addicting as well).  Anyone else going to watch S3?
